Since the 80s, the French have become - by law - equal to men. The inclusion of equality under the law has accompanied the rise of women in society. While many differences remain between the sexes, they are now described objectively and less and less accepted.

Gradually, the theme of equality gives way to that of identity. New generations of women assert their autonomy, they want to be actors in their private and professional life, their leisure, with characteristics that are theirs. The representation of women was profoundly reshaped and in society, female values begin to find their place (see article by Martine Fournier, p. 20).

The fact remains that combine professional success and personal life is always more difficult for women. To get there, the ground has been prepared. Women have taken 150 years to become citizens. Left "the gates of the city" by the French Revolution, some of them have ceased to question the foundations of universalism exclusively male. Historian Michelle Perrot shows that the force of the feminist movement has largely contributed to the modernization of society .
